Nurture and Replenish: Pre-Winter Yoga & Meditation Holiday in Cyprus, Oct 10 – 17 2020

In this beautiful remote part of Cyprus this October 2019, we will be offering a gentle and restful week of Ayurvedic Yoga and meditation, with practices structured especially to replenish and nurture body, mind and heart in preparation for the the long Winter months ahead.
October is a beautiful time to be in Cyprus. The days are warm enough but not too hot, and the sea has warmed through the summer months. During this week, we will take plenty time for rest, walks in nature, and swimming in the sea: there’ll be a chance to visit local tavernas and the lovely Akamas Peninsula.
Our Yoga and meditation practices will be inspired by teachings of Ayurveda, which take this time of year as an essential time to prepare the body and mind for healthy Autumn and Winter seasons. Here are a few of the main points about this lovely week:
  • We will be in a remote part of Cyprus next to a beautiful deserted stretch of beach.
  • Our Yoga practice is right next to the sea and some meditations are on the beach.
  • We will practice a gentle Hatha Yoga class and guided visualisations – meditations in the mornings
  • In the late afternoon we will bring the day to a close with a restorative Yoga class and Yoga Nidra practice
  • Some evenings will be free for you to relax, read, enjoy each other’s company.
  • On a few evenings we will gather for special healing sessions with the Yoga of Sound.
  • Days are free to rest and enjoy the nature, sea, lovely stretch of coast and very special hotel environment.
  • We will be nourished each day by home-made Cypriot vegetarian meals, made from organic and/or locally-sourced, home-made fresh produce.
  • You are free to take lunch in the hotel or in one of the nearby tavernas.
  • Outside of practice, swimming in the sea/pool, resting in the sun, connecting with other retreat participants all add to the nourishment for body, mind and heart enjoyed on these weeks in Cyprus.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my week with you and very much appreciated your energy and enthusiasm, and indeed, your passion for Yoga and Ayurvedic philosophy…I loved the way you taught us in your calm manner to meditate (a completely new practice for me and I never thought I would manage it).” 2017 participant from Cyprus

This retreat is about nourishing and rejuvenating body, mind and heart. Autumn is a time to slow down, according to the teachings of Ayurveda. Nature is inviting this, and as nature becomes quieter and less active, our own bodies and minds want to do the same. Generally, we can be out of touch with this natural tendency, or we interpret it as an indication that we need to take more superfoods, supplements, stimulants – whatever our inclination – so that we can keep the busy pace of life up. However, for true health, to keep our inner reserves replenished, we need to pause and gather strength for our immunity for the harder months of Winter ahead. This is exactly what we will be doing, in the natural beauty of this unspoiled Cypriot landscape, under the warmth of the sun, filling the lungs with good fresh air, prana-charged from the sea, and supported by restorative Yoga, meditation and relaxation practices.
Cyprus is Aphrodite’s island, the island of the goddess of love and I have been going to Cyprus for more than 30 years and know it to be a very special island. The island is filled with beauty. Our hotel is located in an area steeped in the history of the cult of Aphrodite and those Aphrodite qualities of love, beauty, and a gentle but powerful feminine energy seem to permeate the land and the atmosphere, giving power to the healing and transforming work we embark upon. Many who have participated in my yoga retreats and holidays here in the past, have felt the vibration this history gives to the land and how it very much nurtures and empowers our time and Yoga practice here. With the mountains behind and around us and clear blue sea with a long stretch of deserted beach in front of us, this is the perfect setting to move into practice and let go into the healing power of nature. Our time is very much about opening our hearts to love and giving generously to ourselves for nourishment on all levels – body, mind and soul. My deepest wish for this Yoga holiday is that all participants find the space and support to switch off for a while from the demands of every day life and allow the practices to guide each of one of us back to our centre of being where we find a natural sense of well-being in body and mind. There will be two yoga practices daily with guided meditations and visualisations or relaxation practices also.
If you think you would like to join me on this week, I’d love to talk with you.
Love & blessings,

The Yoga

We will practice a gentle Hatha Yoga class in the mornings, with practices specially selected to boost immunity and de-stress the system, as a preparation of body and mind for the Winter months ahead. The Hatha class will include kriyas (cleansing practices), asanas (yoga postures), pranayama (breathing) and guided meditations.  In the late afternoon, we will enjoy Yin-Restorative classes followed by a Yoga Nidra (deep rest ) practice to nourish the body, heart and mind. Both Yoga classes are influenced by Ayurveda and it’s teachings on the effects of the season upon our body and mind.

With a focus on an energetic nourishing of our bodies, hearts and minds, these Yoga classes help us to build steadiness, calm and strength in body and mind. This supports and enhances our “ojas“, the source of our vitality, vigour, immunity and longevity. In particular, when the moon is full and the light of the moon shines on us, we have the perfect conditions for buiding ojas. When the moon is new, it is time to conserve it. We practice with this awareness of the lunar cycles.

These practices, the relaxations and meditations nourish the heart, uplift the spirits, and restore positivity and optimism to the mind.

We will be practicing outdoors on a Yoga platform in the hotel gardens, a stone’s throw from the sea alongside a deserted unspoiled beach, with stunning views of the coast and mountains.

The Teacher

I have been practicing Yoga for more than 30 years, and teaching for 11 years. I trained with the Sivananda Yoga lineage to advanced level, and lived and worked as a senior staff member in the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat, Bahamas for much of 5 years. I am also a fully qualified Yoga Therapist registered with the International Association of Yoga Therapists, and a certified Ayurveda Yoga Wellness Counsellor.

As a full-time Yoga teacher, Yoga therapist and Ayurveda practitioner, now based in the UK, I am dedicated to sharing all that I have learned, not only in those years in the Sivananda ashram, but also on spiritual travels all across the globe. I have travelled to India, Japan, Italy, Spain, Costa Rica, Canada, Scotland, USA and Bahamas to learn from and practice different healing and spiritual traditions. I have done further study in Ayurveda with Dr David Frawley, Atreya Smith, Maya Tiwari, Sunil Joshi, and Mukunda Stiles. Also, I have enjoyed workshops and further study in Yoga with well-known international teachers and masters of Yoga. I am currently doing further training in classical Hatha Yoga.

When not teaching, I spend much time journeying more deeply into the fields of Yoga and Ayurveda, exploring their teachings for healing and transformation of the human body, mind and spirit.

The Hotel

We will be staying in a quiet, remote, eco-hotel, set alongside a beautiful stretch of coast in Cyprus. Here our accommodation and Yoga space look out across the sea and are surrounded by peaceful gardens, olive and orange groves, and herb gardens with mountains beyond to three sides. The tranquil, natural setting invites our whole being to deeply relax and restore itself to balance and happiness

The Food

Apart from the restorative Yoga classes and meditations, further nourishment and opportunity to build vigour and vitality is offered during this week through the nourishing Cypriot vegetarian meals provided.

Our diet is vegetarian for this week. There are meats and fish on offer in the hotel, but a Yogic plant-based diet will support our Yoga and meditation practice and their benefits and it’s a prerequisite to keep to a vegetarian/vegan diet please.

Foods in the hotel are made from home-grown organic produce and locally sourced produce.

Breakfast is a buffet service, taken with other guests of the hotel, and includes home-made breads, preserves, yoghurt and goats’ cheeses, home-grown fruits and herb teas, and the hotel’s own free range eggs.Special dietary requirements can be accommodated – eg gluten-free, dairy-free. Supper is usually a buffet or a Natura special set menu.

Lunch is not included in the retreat fee, but there is an extensive lunch menu in the hotel and there are many tavernas just a short walk away in Polis.

Hotel meals are taken on the restaurant terrace with views across the gardens to the sea. In the evening, we dine whilst watching spectacular sunsets as the sun starts to go down over the sea.

The Accomodation

All accommodation is en-suite and spacious, with air-con,  a sea view and it’s own private terrace. There is a mini bar and a safe in each room. The rooms are cleaned daily and towels are provided.

Other Facilities at the Hotel

There are two swimming pools, a gym and sauna at the hotel for your enjoyment. A 5 euro fee is charged by the hotel for use of the gym and sauna. The hotel provides beach towels and there are sun beds on the sea front, around the pool and in the gardens.Bikes are available for hire, and there are also tennis courts.

The hotel lounge bar sells juices, water, local wine, ice cream, teas and coffees, and the hotel’s own home-grown organic herb teas.

In between classes and meal times, you are free to enjoy the peace and quiet of the hotel gardens and beach, or to explore the beauty, history and culture of the surrounding area.

There is the nearby small town of Polis with it’s many cafes, restaurants and shops. It is just a 15 minute walk away. Alternatively, about a 30 minute walk up the beach is Laatchi with it’s many waterside tavernas.

Nearby sites of interest include Aphrodite’s Baths and the beautiful nature reserve of the Akamas Peninsula. There are jeep tours around the Akamas nature reserve, and boat tours to the wild and deserted Lara Bay and Blue Lagoon.

A little further afield in Paphos (about a 45 minute drive away), are wonderful archaelogical sites such as Tombs of the Kings and the Paphos Mosaics.

There is a massage therapist who lives locally and works at the hotel. You can book a session with her through the hotel reception.

I will be offering 1-1 Ayurveda Consultations, and Journey Therapy sessions ( a guided mind-body process to get to the psychological root cause of mental-emotional issues and physical conditions). Please book these in advance of the Yoga holiday.

  • Agreement to:
  1.  Attend the meditation and Yoga sessions.
  2. To consume alcohol only “after” all Yoga and meditation sessions for the day are finished.
  3. Follow the retreat vegetarian dietary and lifestyle guidelines.
  4. Valid travel insurance.

Please know that daily practice of Yoga and medtiation can mean we sometimes find ourselves going through sensitive moments of transition and change, which may be experienced as reactivity, resistance, anger, sadness. This is all part and parcel of the purificatory nature of consistent practice. ☺ You will have full support, love and respect from Shama, as the retreat teacher and other past, experienced participants at all times. On such a retreat as this, both teacher and all participants require your respect, kindness and cooperation.
